Our Sustainability & Community Impact
The Komodo Archipelago is a global treasure—a fragile ecosystem of unparalleled beauty and biodiversity. At Komodo Cruise Package, we believe it is our fundamental responsibility to be dedicated stewards of this environment and respectful partners to its local communities. Our commitment to sustainability is not an afterthought; it is woven into every aspect of our operations, from the vessels we choose to the supplies we source. Our goal is to ensure that our presence is a positive one, helping to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site for generations to come.
Environmental Commitments: Preserving a Pristine Paradise
Our policies are designed to minimize our footprint and actively contribute to the conservation of Komodo’s marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
- Zero Single-Use Plastics: All our partner vessels have a strict no single-use plastic bottle policy. We provide guests with reusable water bottles and have onboard water filtration systems. All other amenities are provided in reusable or biodegradable containers.
- Advanced Waste Management: Our Phinisis are equipped with modern wastewater treatment systems. All solid waste is meticulously sorted, stored, and properly disposed of at designated facilities in Labuan Bajo. We participate in and support local recycling initiatives.
- Carbon Offsetting Program: We acknowledge the carbon footprint of travel. We partner with the Indonesian foundation Jejak.in to calculate the emissions from each cruise and invest in certified carbon offset projects, such as mangrove reforestation in Indonesian coastal areas.
- Reef-Safe Practices: We provide complimentary reef-safe sunscreen to all guests and educate them on the importance of avoiding chemical sunscreens that harm coral reefs. Our dive masters enforce a strict ‘no-touch’ policy on all dives and snorkel sessions.
- Direct Conservation Support: A percentage of every Komodo cruise package booked is donated directly to our conservation partners, including the Komodo Survival Program and Manta Trust, to fund vital on-the-ground research, patrols, and community education.
Community Commitments: Empowering Local Stewards
Sustainable tourism is about people. We are dedicated to creating a positive economic and social impact in the communities of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
- Local Employment Priority: We are committed to maximizing local employment. Over 85% of the crew on our partner vessels and our entire ground team in Labuan Bajo are from local NTT communities, providing stable, well-paid employment.
- Sourcing from Local Enterprises: We prioritize sourcing our provisions—from fresh fish and organic vegetables to artisan coffee—from local markets and producers in and around Labuan Bajo. This ensures that the economic benefits of tourism flow directly into the local economy.
- Supporting Cultural Heritage: We partner with local communities, such as the weavers in Melo Village or the fishing community on Mesa Island, to offer authentic, respectful cultural experiences that provide a direct source of income and help preserve traditional crafts and ways of life.
- Educational Initiatives: Through our parent company, Juara Holding Group, we support a local foundation that provides school supplies and educational scholarships for children in remote island villages within the Komodo National Park, helping to build a brighter future for the next generation.
Our approach to sustainability is guided by our belief that the best way to experience the magic of Komodo is to do so responsibly. We invite you to join us on a journey that is as meaningful as it is memorable.
